  • ASC Hockey Camp 2010

The 3 day Hockey Camp conducted at Essendon Hockey centre saw five of our U/13 team participate in an intensive skills development programme. Not only did they improve their skills significantly, it was an excellent team building effort, with then having a great chance to work closely with each other in the 3 days and cement a great bond with each other. They developed an excellent rapport with each other, had a chance to see how others at the same level and make some new friends along the way. It was an excellent opportunity for the core of the team to build, get to know and understand each other more and build up stronger bonds. The conversations in the bus to & from the centre was most enlightening, with new skills and tactics being the centre of conversation.

Here is the feedback from the U13’s
    Tyler:
“I loved it. It was great how they invited Luke Doerner to teach us how to “drag-flick”. It was really great how us 5 Stingrays got to go in a bus and to have the same group to learn our skills together. We loved playing “truth or dare” in our lunch break each day and we met some other cool friends from Hawthorn Hockey Club.”
    Jess:
“All together I think each and every one of us learned new skills and had a fun time. During the first two days we were taught multiple skills by some Australian men and women hockey players. Our skills for moving the ball around improved throughout the three days. At the end of the camp we tested our skills in scratch matches; we enjoyed playing these matches as it showed our improvement.”
    Tamara:
“I feel we benefited from the Hockey Camp because we learned some neat new skills such as jinking and drag flicking and we are looking forward to trying them out in matches. We had a great time over the three days and enjoyed meeting with Australian Hockey Players such as the Kookaburra defender, Luke Doerner who played in the World Cup team this year.”
    Will:
“On the last day we played heaps of mini games and the best game was when we played the U15’s .”
    Cai:
“On Wednesday the 30th of June to the 2nd of July some under 13 players went to Essendon Hockey to participate in a hockey camp with people from other clubs and other districts. We learnt skills like short stick hitting, flicking and drag flicking .The players got closer in the three days that the hockey camp was on for.”

The only additional comments that I can add are:
The Oreo’s game in the bus was hilarious and I think I gained a couple of extra son in laws. On a more serious note it was a great event that saw the kids physically active throughout the three days, bonding and laughing. The camp itself taught tactical skills as well as the drills, and also spent time addressing the body care elements such as the importance of warmup/downs and first aid treatments for muscle pulls and tears etc.

As Mike summed up: “I felt the camp was an excellent development step for the kids and they got immeasurable benefit, both tangible and intangible from the experience, and I would recommend the experience to anyone.”
